Biography

Austrian-American bodybuilder, actor and politician nicknamed "The Austrian Oak". He started lifting at 15 and won Mr. Universe at 20, then collected seven Mr. Olympia titles — six in a row from 1970 to 1975 and a comeback win in 1980. His physique and stage presence pulled bodybuilding out of its niche and into the mainstream. After retiring from competition he became a Hollywood star and served as governor of California from 2003 to 2011.

Training approach

In his competitive years Schwarzenegger trained twice a day, six days a week: chest, back and abs in the morning, arms and shoulders in the evening, legs on separate days. The volume was enormous by any modern standard. He is also associated with the idea of "shocking" the muscle — changing exercises, order and tempo so the body never settles into a routine; in his own words, the body hits a wall and has to be surprised with new stimuli. How often he actually used that is disputed: some accounts call it a rare tool rather than a staple.

Own supplement brand

Arnold's Pump Club The Arnold Schwarzenegger Series supplement line was produced under licence by MusclePharm and is no longer made — the arnoldseries.com domain is up for sale. His current official project is Arnold's Pump Club: a daily email, a podcast and a merchandise store rather than a supplement brand. Visit the site →
