🇺🇸 Lee Haney
Reign: 1984–1991
Biography
American bodybuilder who won eight consecutive Mr. Olympia titles from 1984 to 1991 and then retired undefeated — a record later matched, but never beaten, by Ronnie Coleman. His approach was summed up by his own motto: stimulate the muscle, don't annihilate it. After competing he chaired the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports from 1999 to 2002 and was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
Training approach
Haney summed up his method in one line: "Stimulate, don't annihilate." He deliberately avoided training to failure — in his words, that only raised the risk of injury, while stopping at a stimulus let him recover and come back stronger. He ran a three-days-on, one-day-off split with two exercises per muscle group from different angles, and adjusted volume by how he felt that day. Eight consecutive Olympia titles and retirement undefeated are the argument for it.
