🇬🇧 Dorian Yates
Reign: 1992–1997
Biography
English bodybuilder and six-time Mr. Olympia champion, winning every year from 1992 to 1997. He was nicknamed "The Shadow" for his discreet approach: he trained away from the spotlight and often appeared at major shows without announcing himself in advance. Known for extraordinary conditioning and a wide, thick back, he brought a new level of mass and density to the sport. Influenced by Mike Mentzer, Yates popularised high-intensity training with few sets taken to failure.
Training approach
Yates popularised high-intensity training: after a thorough warm-up he did just one or two all-out working sets per exercise, taken to complete failure, and trained each body part once a week. He credits Arthur Jones and Mike Mentzer as his influences, but unlike Mentzer he insisted on more than one exercise per muscle group for full development. His own correction to the legend: the point was never the weight on the bar but control of the negative and strict form.
